Music Lessons

The Quick Stuff..

Thanks for your interest in taking music lessons here with me. I’m based in Philadelphia, PA, but will be doing all lessons remote using Google Meet at this time. Let me me outline some of what we will cover:

  • Firstly, we’ll be discussing what your musical goals are. Do you just want to play your favorite songs? Let’s do it. If your interests lie in pursuing some more advanced musical goals, like “I want to play in my Church’s band”, “I want to play in my own band”, “I want to play professionally”, etc. I will develop a curriculum, specific to you, to attain those goals. If you’re not sure what your goals are yet, then we’ll work on that too.
  • From there we’ll work on the basic facility on your instrument. We’ll start off with technique, so that your foundation is solid. After that we’ll get on with working on some broader musical concepts, like developing good tone, good time, ear training, music theory, etc. If you’re coming to me with a good handle on some or all of these things than we will get onto the more advanced stuff quickly.
  • I work hard to expand the musical horizons (should you be willing) of the students that I work with. Again, if we’re just going to go through the entire Green Day catalog than I am down for that, but I will also push to introduce you to some new music to listen to and to play. I firmly believe that “you are what you eat” applies also to the music that you intake, and in music being more versatile usually means being a better musician.

Further info

I am also a big advocate for learning to read music, so if you don’t know how (or need a bit of a refresher), I will be teaching you how to read music. Reading music alone isn’t what makes great musicians great, and there are countless examples of great musicians who cannot read. There is nothing to lose and much to gain from learning to read music. When we work on a song, I’ll write you out a transcription of it so that you can refer to it at any time. I’ll also make it available elsewhere on this site. I’ve got other transcriptions available here.

When you sign up with me, I will make you an individualized Google Drive folder containing any pertinent documents or notes that I have for you from our lessons. This will always include a specific outline of what I’d like for you to work on between lessons. You will never be confused as to what you should be working on.

I possess IT industry certifications from CompTIA and Microsoft, so please be assured that the tech stuff will always be working on my end, and I will be able to assist you with any tech issues that you may have on your end. I will also be available at any time to advise you on gear or technology purchases that can help you accomplish whatever goals you may have.
